University of Las Vegas opens Tropicana Garage

DESMAN Associates is pleased to announce that the University of Las Vegas (UNLV) has opened its new Tropicana Garage on August 15, 2009. It is a 4-level, 1000 car cast-in-place garage with a bus waiting area for the UNLV shuttle. It is the second of two parking structures on campus and is expandable to 2,000 spaces horizontally with additional provisions made to allow the inclusion of a future transit center to the north.
Tad McDowell, Director of Parking and Transportation at UNLV says it has been very well received by returning faculty and students who are ecstatic about the added parking inventory. “The new deck provides convenient parking to the central campus and is a welcome sight to our returning students and faculty.”
The Tropicana Garage is located west of the Recreation and Wellness Center and south of the Thomas and Mack Auditorium. It has been specially designed to accommodate event patrons attending the Thomas & Mack Auditorium with special ramping features to allow for complete exiting of the facility within thirty minutes.
Sustainability and green solutions were very important as the deck was built to meet LEED design standards and the design team made every effort to ensure minimal environmental impact.
DESMAN Associates was the Structural Engineer of Record and Parking Consultant, Martin Harris was the General Contractor and Pugsley Simpson Coulter was the Architect of Record.
