The St. Louis city treasurer’s office broke ground Friday, January 11th, 2008 on the new $16 million downtown parking garage that will be built on the pre-existing surface lot at Tucker Boulevard and Clark Avenue.

DESMAN has been hired as the project’s engineering and architectural firm along with St. Louis-based C. Rallo Contracting Co., that will serve as the construction manager.

The 192,000 sf, 542-car eight-level Justice Center Garage will also have 10,000 sf of retail at street level and will be surrounded by 20-foot sidewalks, making the retail space ideal for a mid-priced steakhouse or sports bar and bistro seating. It will be utilized by employees working the area’s newly-developed office and business space and serve as the linchpin for sports parking and a catalyst for further revitalization in and around Cupples Station.

The garage’s contemporary facade will feature Diamond Vision Boards and programmable LED lights that will change colors in celebration of the successes of sports teams, holidays and special events, such as the annual Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure.

“Parking in downtown, as in any urban center, is at a premium, and without parking, businesses can’t thrive,” said Steve Baker, director of planning and support services for the treasurer. “There is a real dearth of parking in that area.”
