Type: Health Care
Project Name: Oakwood North Parking Facility at Oakwood Hospital City: Dearborn State: MI Client: Oakwood Hospital Features: 300 vehicles of 4 levels which serve primarily hospital employees. Description: The Oakwood Hospital North Deck located in Dearborn, Michigan is the second of two decks that DESMAN designed to accommodate Oakwood Hospital’s continued growth. The North Deck contains approximately 300 vehicles on 4 levels which serve primarily hospital employees. The deck is unique in that the lower level contains a dock area with loading berths which service the entire hospital campus. The deck also houses generators for the main hospital buildings. The exterior appearance was critical to the success of the project in that the site is located at the “front door” of the hospital. The building needed to be designed using contextural materials that blended with the design of the other hospital buildings, but in such a way that it did not draw attention away from the main hospital entrance. A combination of brick and stone was used for the façade to achieve the contextural goal. Punched openings and glass enclosed stair towers were used to offset the horizontal elements commonly seen on most parking decks. “Value Added” • DESMAN interacted with adjacent neighborhood groups to obtain approval. • Tight site required challenging functional solution • Record storage and loading doc area needed to be protected from water penetration. DESMAN’s expertise in the area allowed us to develop an effective solution. • Design maintained hospitals architectural goals. DESMAN is Architect and Structural Engineer of Record. |
