Prince George Parking Garage
Prince George Parking Garage

Type: Municipal
Project Name: Prince George Parking Garage
City: Williamsburg
State: VA
Client: City of Williamsburg

Features: Three-level, 362-space Parking Garage serving downtown Williamsburg.

Description: The design and construction of this parking facility was the result of a decade-long consulting relationship between DESMAN Associates and the City of Williamsburg and the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation. Previously DESMAN had completed a parking master plan for the City of Williamsburg which included an assessment of parking demand, future parking forecasting, site selection for garage for garage development, and physical planning for the proposed parking garage. In addition, DESMAN developed an operations master plan for the Colonial Williamsburg Foundation which included recommendations and implementation strategies for the introduction of revenue control devices in Foundation-owned lots. Situated immediately adjacent to the Merchant’s Square Central Business District and one block from the colonial Duke of Gloucester Street, this parking facility serves the downtown business district and tourists. DESMAN Associates served as Parking Consultant and Structural Engineer of Record. DESMAN’s cost-effective approach with development of the modern and efficient building interior allowed for the development of the “carriage-house” colonial exterior to be constructed within the project budget. The parking facility is a three-bay, cast-in-place concrete post-tensioned structure whose layout encourages the desired pedestrian traffic flow. During design and construction, DESMAN assisted the City in developing a strategy for access and revenue control which resulted in the introduction of pay-on-foot technology thus reducing labor expenses of the garage operation. This facility has been recognized for a number of awards including the Hampton Roads chapter of the American Institute of Architects.
