BWI Daily Garage A

Type: Airports
Project Name: BWI Daily Garage A
City: Anne Arundel
State: Maryland
Client: State of Maryland

Features: Nine-level, 8400-space parking garage with “Smart Garage” technology serving Baltimore - Washington International Airport.

Description: This 8,400-car parking structure at Baltimore-Washington International Airport was designed to serve short and long term parkers and completed in two phases. The garage was constructed featuring a cast-in-place, post-tensioned concrete structural frame and designed to accommodate future horizontal expansion in the direction of the terminal. The helical ramps provided one-way access between each of the flat levels and were, along with the garage entrance, constructed above the storm water management pond. Additional ramping was provided on the far end of the garage to facilitate internal circulation. The garage was also designed to integrate with the airport’s transportation system incorporating shuttle-bus stops on the second level and the ability to accommodate a future people-mover system to connect the garage with the terminal. Incorporating the “BWI Smart Park” wayfinding technology, this garage enabled visitors to find parking spaces more efficiently. Ultrasonic sensors were mounted above each space in order to monitor availability throughout the garage. Electronic signs at the entrance of the garage, each level, each row, and each space allow visitors to easily find vacant spaces. DESMAN’s role was that of parking functional designer, structural engineer of record, and revenue control system design specialist.
