Madison Washington Wells Self-Park
Chicago, IL

Type: Expansion
Project Name: Madison Washington Wells Self-Park
City: Chicago
State: Illinois
Client: Equity Office Properties, LLC

Features: 1,365 car garage including 1,025-car base garage with a 335-car horizontal and vertical expansion.

Description: The first phase of the Madison/Washington/Wells Self Park was completed in 1988. The 1,030-car first phase structure as designed by DESMAN included 12 structurally supported levels of parking with ground level commercial/retail space. Another 335 spaces were added on top and to the north of the structure in late 1995. the additional spaces were gained in a number of ways. First of all, one vertical level of parking was added to the base garage (at the N.E. corner of Madison & Wells Streets). An existing historic office building at 179 West Washington Street (at the S.E. corner of Washington & Wells Streets) was completely renovated to accommodate eight levels of structured parking between levels three and ten of the original building, the ground level and second level (first structured level) was designed as commercial/retail/office space. The top (11th) level is office space. The parking levels in the renovated 179 W. Washington Street Building were linked to the base garage (to the South) by parking linkage floors. The project presented several unique challenges, which DESMAN met, to cost effectively save and convert the existing historic ?179? Building into structured parking while efficiently linking it to the existing garage to the south that was completed seven years earlier. DESMAN Associates is the Architect and Structural Engineer of Record.
