Type: Higher Education
Project Name: West Campus Parking Ramp ExpansionCity: Iowa City
State: Iowa
Client: University of Iowa
Features: 675-car space, two-bay wide parking structure on five supported levels plus grade.
Description: The West Campus Parking Ramp Expansion project is a five and one-half level-parking ramp that accommodates 675 cars. The two-bay, single—helix structure with 90 degree parking stalls and two-way traffic is sited to provide convenient and accessible parking and pedestrian movement to the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics (UIHC), Eye Institute and Field House Complex.
The ramp is constructed of cast-in-place post-tensioned concrete and is served by two elevators, three stairs, and three vehicular entries. In addition, the ramp contains a number of UIHC support facilities including:
- Skywalk connecting ramp to UIHC Eye Institute
- Orthopedic Dept. shell space
- Tunnel connecting the ramp to UIHC Eye Institute
- Medical Record storage & service space
- Storage space for two Mobile Critical Care Units
To address the diverse scale and architectural character of the buildings surrounding the project, a durable and low-maintenance perforated stainless steel panel system was selected for portions of the ramp façade to visually reflect the UIHC Eye Institute when approaching from the west, the Field House when approached from the east and the residential neighborhood across Melrose Avenue from the south.
