INOVA Fairfax Hospital Garage 5
Fairfax, Virginia

Type: Health Care
Project Name: INOVA Fairfax Hospital Garage 5
City: Fairfax
State: Virginia
Client: INOVA Facilities Development

Features: 2300-car space, 3-bay wide parking structure on 6-1/2 supported levels above grade plus 3 levels below grade.

Description: This project was developed on a site formerly occupied by employee surface lots. The structure was designed to accommodate relocated employees and consolidate employees from other lots, thus freeing up other parking for patients and visitors. The garage can be modified to allow paying customers if the conversion is deemed desirable. An incorporated campus maintenance facility occupies one end of the structure.

The new facility uses of pre-cast panels, hand laid brick, aluminum window walls and cast parapets to enhance appearance and blend with the adjacent medical center campus buildings. Glass backed elevators and open glassed back stairs provide secure inviting vertical transportation. The large number of vehicles that will occupy the facility will be processed and dispersed via a number of design elements including the scissor double helix ramping system and the multiple entry points (7 lanes at 3 portals).

This project, the second designed on the INOVA Fairfax campus (Garage 4 completed in September 2001) was awarded the “Craftmanship Award Winner” by the Washington Building Congress.
