Gateway Adjacent On-Site
Gateway Adjacent On-Site

Type: Special Event/Hospitality/Casino
Project Name: Gateway Adjacent Parking Garage On-Site
City: Cleveland
State: Ohio
Client: City of Cleveland

Features: 2,200-car space, two and three bays wide parking facility on four supported levels plus grade with an “L-shaped” configuration.

Description: The Gateway Complex contains Jacob’s field for the Cleveland Indians baseball franchise, the Gund Arena for the Cleveland Cavaliers basketball franchise and two parking structures to service the complex. The City’s intent was to create exciting, dynamic facilities that would not only breathe life back into the City, but also serve as infrastructure to help promote additional development integral with the complex.

As a major component to the complex, the Gateway on-site garage needed to be designed as a major feature and not just a support service type building. A great deal of effort was put into the high-tech look of the structure as well as towards solutions for the complex program and demanding functional requirements. The facility houses approximately 2,200 vehicles at full capacity and has been designed to empty within a 30-minute time frame. Three 100-foot pedestrian bridges link the garage to the various venues and eight stair towers were designed to accommodate the large influx of patrons. Satellite dishes for television communication were installed at the roof level as well as a platform area for launching fireworks following all Cleveland Indian home runs. Special translucent panels were installed in the spandrel openings to give the building a “glowing” effect while preventing patrons from getting a free view of the stadium on game days.

The “on-site” garage is a combination of cast-in-place concrete, steel and glass, and has received great acclaim for its successful functional, aesthetic and sensitive design. DESMAN Associates is the Parking Consultant and Structural Engineer of Record.
