DESMAN Associates is on the forefront of parking structure design, and as such, is proactive in providing parking solutions that embrace environmental and energy efficient design. Many client types such as corporate campuses, colleges and universities, municipalities, and health organizations have LEED equivalency requirements for the design and construction of their buildings. From the inception of a project DESMAN works with clients on educating them about sustainable design — its economic and environmental advantages, and how sustainable design elements can be incorporated into their project. There are many sustainable design elements inherent to parking structures, as well as those that could be incorporated with little to no additional cost. Some of the items that DESMAN successfully includes in projects are:
- Construction storm water management plans
- Preferred parking spaces for alternative fuel vehicles
- Preferred parking spaces for carpool users
- Charging stations for electric vehicles
- On-site renewable energy in the form of wind harvesting, solar panels, and geothermal wells
- Minimizing daytime energy usage by maximizing natural light penetration into the parking structure
- Metering lighting systems for ongoing optimization
- Utilizing locally available materials
- Specifying VOC-compliant sealers, sealants, and paints
- Roof vegetation/landscaping to reduce the “Heat Island” effect
- Recycling or salvaging 75% of construction debris
- Including recycled content in construction materials
DESMAN has LEED Accredited Professionals on staff to work with project teams on identifying appropriate sustainable elements for each project, implementing the elements into the design of the building, and assisting with the LEED rating standard and process. DESMAN is committed to sustainable design practices, and encourages those involved in the design, construction, and operation of parking structures to incorporate sustainable design elements into each project.
