Summary

Ala Moana Center, Hawaii's largest shopping center located in Honolulu just minutes from Waikiki, is an open-air shopping oasis.  Ala Moana Center currently features more than 290 stores, one of the largest collections of luxury retailers in the world, four major department stores (Macy's, Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, and Sears) and more than 15,000 parking spaces. DESMAN has worked actively at the Ala Moana Mall for the last seven years as the mall has undergone a complete makeover. Some of the work that desman has performed include; Documentation and as-built layout for parking for much of the shopping center parking;

  • Concepts for expansion; service location and truck maneuvering below the decks in numerous locations
  • Stripping and lane modifications
  • Temporary access plans and restriping for miscellaneous construction phasing
  • Restoration and structural analysis for supported areas of the existing decks surrounding the Center
  • The functional design of the ring road extension over Nordstrom’s
  • Peer review of Park Lane I
  • Develop vehicles and trolleys circulation around the Mall
  • Redevelopment of the old Sears on the Eva side of the mall and maneuvering studies for trucks
  • Parking Guidance Systems and Wayfinding
  • Inspection and replacement of impact barriers in garages and interiors
  • Expert witness services

Additionally, traffic simulations were prepared for three different layout designs of the site.  Each simulation analyzed the proposed access points to the site, to the garages, and the level of service of the intersections surrounding the site.  This helped in determining what traffic mitigations are necessary, where to locate the garage access points, and if the internal traffic of the site would operate efficiently.
