MVRTA Newburyport Intermodal Parking Facility

Features

3 level, 207 space precast parking facility with MVRTA ticketing office and lobby/waiting area for bus connections.

Summary

The City of Newburyport and the Merrimack Valley Regional Transit Authority (MVRTA) collaboratively funded the parking facility in downtown Newburyport. The garage had been studied by the City for nearly 30 years as an effective way to move cars off the waterfront surface lots and streets of downtown Newburyport. The facility is located on Merrimack Street, a short distance from Route 1 to intercept cars travelling to Newburyport prior to the downtown area. The garage features highly detailed thin-brick embedded precast façade and faux window grilles to meet the architectural standards of the City’s historic commission and assimilate the downtown area. Fennick McCredie Architecture served as the concept architect on the project working with the City planning board to get a garage façade concept to meet the aesthetic goals of the project.

The garage provides parking and a ticketing office for the regional MVRTA bus system. Street improvements were provided to allow two buses to berth in front of the garage and not impinge traffic. Additional street and sidewalk improvements were made to improve pedestrian connections from the garage to downtown destinations.
