Summary
The Center Street Park & Ride is a bus and multi-modal transit “hub” facility serving monthly and daily transient parkers and intra-city bus passengers of the Des Moines Metro Transit System. Bus circulation and curbside pick-up and drop-off areas are located inside the facility. A total of four bus berths are accommodated along curbside. Amenities include an enclosed passenger ticketing room with passenger waiting area and rest room facilities. A 3,500 square foot day care center is conveniently integrated into the southwest corner of the facility. Bicycle racks are also provided in meeting with the FTA funded multi-modal concept of the facility. The structural system consists of cast-in-place post-tensioned concrete floors and beams with conventionally reinforced concrete columns.
DESMAN is the Parking Functional Designer, Parking Systems Consultant, and Structural Engineer of Record to a Des Moines-based prime architect. The facility is the Merit Award recipient by the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) for their Design for Transportation National Awards 2000. The Center Street Park and Ride is also the winner of the Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute (CRSI) 2000 Design Award Competition for design aesthetics, engineering achievement, functional excellence and economy of construction.
